TIki News: Trader Vic's Tiki Bar in Dallas is Closing. :(

A Tiki Temple Will Close it's Doors.

“We apologize for the lengthy silence. As you may know, earlier this year a pipe burst in our restaurant. We tried tirelessly to find a way to keep the doors open, but the cost of remodeling was just too high. We will not be reopening Trader Vic’s Dallas, however, we are very excited about a new concept restaurant that will be taking over the space. For now, that is all we can share. As we work through this process, we will use this fan page to keep you as informed as possible. Thank you for all the great memories at Trader Vic’s Dallas!“

FULL PRESS RELEASE:

SMUGGLER’S COVE COMING FALL 2009 TO SAN FRANCISCO

SAN FRANCISCO, CA- This fall, San Francisco will become home to Smuggler’s Cove, a new bar designed to celebrate the incredible diversity and versatility of the world’s most exciting spirit: Rum. Smuggler’s Cove offers a whole new approach to rum by featuring a vast array of traditional Caribbean drinks, classic libations of Prohibition-Era Havana, and famous exotic cocktails from legendary tiki bars- all under one roof. In addition, Smuggler’s Cove will offer an unparalleled selection of rare and premium rums from around the world carefully selected for enjoying on their own or skillfully blended into cocktails. For over a decade, owner and creator Martin Cate has been passionate about rum & tropical cocktails. He was the co-creator, designer and chief mixologist for Forbidden Island Tiki Lounge in Alameda, CA. He has judged in international rum competitions, met with over a dozen rum distillers in five countries, and lectured at Bourbon and Branch’s Beverage Academy, Tales of the Cocktail, and Tiki Oasis. “I am very excited to help showcase this wonderfully varied spirit both on its own and in delicious cocktails. A great rum drink can be simple and elegant, or complex and dynamic, but it must always be balanced, approachable, and just a pleasure to drink,” says Martin Cate. “Too often, people associate rum with syrupy and artificial drinks and we’re here to change that.” Martin has traveled the world to learn the rich history and explore the traditional spices and regional ingredients of the world’s rum producing countries in order to feature them in the cocktails of Smuggler’s Cove. As an award-winning mixologist and member of the United States Bartenders Guild for the last four years, Martin is committed to using only the best quality spirits, fresh-squeezed juices, and housemade ingredients. But while Martin is serious about the drinks, he knows that people are looking for a memorable and fun experience as well. “Smuggler’s Cove will be more than just a tiki bar, but it will feature the kind of dramatic, mysterious, and escapist atmosphere that makes a tiki bar so special- and makes rum taste better!”Smuggler’s Cove will include waterfalls, vintage nautical décor and rum memorabilia, and relics from some of San Francisco’s most famous historic watering holes. Smuggler’s Cove will open November 2009 in San Francisco, CA.

A subterranean Tiki haven in Echo Park. Cool basement tiki bar.

TIKI BAR SPOTLIGHT.

Lawrence K. Ho, Los Angeles Times

The Tiki Bar in the basement of the home of Alan Smart and Michael Uhlenkott in Echo Park.

A subterranean Tiki

haven in Echo Park.

From the LA Times.

ears of memorabilia collecting led Alan Smart and Michael Uhlenkott to turn their basement into an island shrine.

October 18, 2008

THERE'S AN underlying sense of levity and playfulness in the Echo Park house that Alan Smart and Michael Uhlenkott designed. Then there's the basement.

Head downstairs, turn right at the bottom of the steps and you enter Smart and Uhlenkott's re-creation of a 1950s tiki bar -- the HaleKahiki (or "Tahitian Room"), as they have dubbed it, which rivals the best Polynesian room you've seen.

"Michael and I have been going to swap meets, collecting Hawaiiana and surfing things for years," Smart says. "I figured, if you don't have a room for it, there's only so much you can collect."

Completed in 2006 after four months of construction, practically every surface of the HaleKahiki is covered with memorabilia. "We wanted old stuff, so we did our research to see how tiki bars were built in the old days," Smart says of the 1950s and '60s, when Polynesiana was popular in Southern California.

Beach signs and other artifacts are layered over block-printed and tapa-papered walls.Lauhala-style woven matting is overhead, between the ceiling joists. A faux roof made of bamboo and palm leaves is suspended above the bar; a raised platform at one end of the room accommodates vintage rattan seating in front of an exotic black-lighted volcano lagoon mural that Uhlenkott painted.

Artist John Bok created the bar's rattan panels and hammered rusty-tin-can edging (sealed in a clear resin). The bar top features tiles designed by Uhlenkott, inspired by traditional Marquesan patterns. Tiki Tony, a Camarillo artist, carved several palm-wood posts and skull poles.

Hawaiian music drifts through the space; the dim lighting and candles set the mood. Smart plays bartender, serving up vintage martini glasses full of fruity cocktails ("known to cause bigger hangovers than less sugary drinks," he warns).

This tiki shrine is a favorite party destination.

"It is used fairly often," Smart says. "I have friends who threaten to come over every week."

Get A Tropical Look With Tiki Bar Furniture. Informative article.

Get A Tropical Look With Tiki Bar Furniture

One of the cooler things brought on by advent of Polynesian tiki culture is the renowned tiki bar. Giving off an air reminiscent of ancient tribal surroundings, a tiki bar is an awesome place to enjoy and lose yourself to another domain.

For those unfamiliar with this modern-day tropical delight, a tiki bar is usually modeled after a tiki hut. A distinctive structure usually made with bamboo and a special roof made of woven grass or leaves, known as a thatched roof. The bar adorned with distinctive tiki decor and tiki furniture which gives it such a unique style and appearance.

The great thing about tiki bars is feeling off being on vacation in some exotic locale, all without having to actually go off to some remote place and spending big bucks in the process. The somewhat weird ambiance and almost otherworldly atmosphere invoked by the tiki bar can make a wonderful setting for some truly memorable parties!

Tiki enthusiast can visit these bars in many different places as they're quickly gaining in popularity. There's nothing like slipping off to the Caribbean for a drink or two to escape that blistering blizzard just outside those tiki doors.

Those who love going to tiki bars can even build their own private tiki bar all in comfort of their own home. Whether by the pool or in the basement, having a private tiki bar is huge load of fun and source of pride. Tiki bar owners are sure to be very popular around the neighborhood and shouldn't be surprised to constantly have a few guest wanting share in on the fun and party.

So what exactly makes a tiki bar tick, so to speak? Those interested in owning their own tiki bar or those that already run one should know that the most important thing is to maintain the wonderful tiki atmosphere by making sure their tiki bar is well decorated with special tiki decor items. The most important of these being the tiki furniture as these form the backbone and foundation of well maintained tiki bar.

There are various forms of tiki furniture, all with different designs, functions, and sizes. They can be made from a variety of different materials, ranging from plywood and cement, to the more exotic materials such as bamboo and specialty rocks.

One of the most important pieces of furniture is of course, the actual bar itself. This should be given particularly vital attention to quality as this is the centerpiece of the entire establishment.

For the bar, bamboo is usually the way to go. There's something about that wonder plant that exudes island glamour. Bamboo bars can be made partly or completely of bamboo and are completed by the distinct thatched roof.

As for the bar counter, some are made of plywood or tied up pieces of bamboo. You can try using something special such lava rocks to make it extra special.

Tiki totem poles of ancient, Polynesian gods make the perfect bar stools to amuse and slightly frighten would-be bar patrons. These pieces are meticulously carved into the likeness of scowling gods or moai (disembodied head monoliths). These bar stools can also come with tapa seat cloth for added authenticity.

Another cool trick is to place umbrellas on the table or other furniture and then to cover the umbrellas with thatch umbrella covers to give the look of a tropical island.

There is a lot of wonderful tiki furniture available to fill your bar with. Things like carved moai tables topped with funky tiki lamps can contribute to making your bar a success.

It is also important to make use of good lighting in your tiki bar. Though be careful when using bamboo torches or any fire hazards. Tiki bars along with containing large amounts of alcohol are commonly made out of rather flammable materials so be sure to take the proper precautions less your tiki paraiso turns in a tiki inferno.

Obtaining tiki furniture and other decor is fortunately easier now than it has ever been, thanks to the internet. Ready made furniture as well customizable orders and building plans are readily available online. Just be sure to research beforehand that the site your ordering from is reputable.

Tiki bars are only as good as their furniture so tiki bar owners should be sure to invest in quality tiki furniture to maximize the bars potential.
